Who Keeps the Lights On at River Run Between the Last Gondola and the First Chair?

October 1, 2026

On a Tuesday night in late September, with the gondola stopped and the bike park closed, where do you get dinner at the base of Keystone?

For years the honest answer was "not many places." Summit Daily reported this summer that locals have long joked about Keystone turning into a ghost town once the ski season ends. The paper also noted that the community has spent decades trying to build a downtown that keeps businesses going year-round. This fall is the first shoulder season with all four of Kindred Resort's food and drink concepts running at the base of the River Run Gondola. That makes the next several weeks the first real test of that goal. The early answer depends on which night you go out.

The Resort Side Has Already Closed

Keystone Resort's summer operations went to a Friday-through-Sunday schedule after Labor Day and ended Sunday, September 20. Several familiar stops closed before that or right along with it:

  • Lakeside Village lake rentals and Rathbone Tap Room had a listed season of June 25 through September 7.
  • Mountain House Café, Mountain House Coffee Corner and Last Lift Bar now show "Closed until Next Winter!" on the resort's hours page.
  • River Course Grill is listed by the resort as summer season only.

So the resort's own summer is finished. What's still open near the gondola is mostly Kindred, which runs on its own schedule.

Kindred's Four Kitchens, Night by Night

The Goodz Tavern and Kinji Sushi opened over Memorial Day weekend in the back section of Kindred, the resort Summit Daily describes as roughly $300 million. They joined Lula's and the Kindred Spirit lobby bar. Founder Shervin Rashidi told the paper that the goal is a gathering place that stays busy all year.

The posted hours show that all four are not open every night. This is how the week breaks down, based on each restaurant's current listing:

Night Lula's Kindred Spirit The Goodz Tavern Kinji Sushi
Monday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 3–9 p.m. Closed
Tuesday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Closed Closed
Wednesday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Closed Closed
Thursday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 3–9 p.m. 5–9 p.m.
Friday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–10 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., bar to midnight 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 5–9 p.m.
Saturday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–10 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., bar to midnight 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 5–9 p.m.
Sunday Breakfast 7–10:30 a.m., dinner 5–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 5–9 p.m.

From Thursday through Sunday, you can choose among four places a short walk from the gondola. Lula's and Kindred Spirit carry Tuesday and Wednesday by themselves. The Goodz Tavern adds Monday, and Kinji Sushi returns Thursday. So "year-round" at the base currently means seven nights of dinner, with the full lineup only on the back half of the week.

Summit Daily says reservations at The Goodz Tavern and Kinji Sushi aren't required but are highly recommended. One scheduling note: Kindred's own FAQ page, updated September 9, still lists both newer restaurants as "opening soon," while their own websites post regular hours. Check the restaurant's site or call before you go, especially early in the week.

Rashidi also said he expected business to pick up this summer after a slower-than-expected winter, which he blamed partly on low snowpack and a shortened ski season. These fall weeks come between that summer rebound and whatever this winter brings, and they show whether the base holds traffic with no lifts running at all.

Beyond River Run, a Shorter List With Firm Dates

Outside the Kindred building, the fall options are fewer but more specific. Several come with end dates you can put on the calendar.

Snake River Saloon lists service seven days a week, with dining from 5 to 9:30 p.m., the bar open from 4 p.m. to close, and happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Its live music calendar has three evening shows on the books, each from 6 to 9 p.m.

  1. Levi Corrigan on Friday, September 25
  2. Mandy Hallman on Saturday, September 26
  3. Michelle McHugh on Saturday, October 3

Ski Tip Lodge is holding an outdoor Oktoberfest après from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 26. That is three weeks after Keystone's main Oktoberfest, which filled River Run on September 5. Ski Tip's regular dinner runs Thursday through Sunday in summer and Wednesday through Sunday in winter. The resort's page doesn't give a 2026 date for when the winter schedule starts.

Keystone Ranch has the clearest cutoff. Summer lunch runs Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and après runs Thursday through Sunday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., both through October 4. Summer dinner runs Thursday through Saturday through October 3. The page doesn't list any service after those dates, so the weekend of October 3 and 4 is the last posted chance at the Ranch this fall.

Bighorn Bistro is listed on the resort's hours table for breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. daily. Its Tock page was showing open dinner reservation times this week.

Kickapoo Tavern posts daily hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The page doesn't say whether those hours hold through the shoulder season. 9280 at River Run still lists summer hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday, with no fall schedule posted. Call ahead for either one.

How Long the Gap Lasts Depends on Cold Nights

Last year's timeline shows roughly how this gap closes:

  1. September 18, 2025. Keystone test-fired its snow guns. Communications director Sarah McLear said temperatures weren't yet cold enough for effective snowmaking, but the test made sure the system was ready once they were.
  2. October 12, 2025. Actual snowmaking started overnight when a cold stretch arrived.
  3. October 25, 2025. Keystone opened as the first ski resort in North America for the 2025-26 season. It ran from 3 to 6 p.m. under the lights on Schoolmarm and Silver Spoon, with guests riding the River Run Gondola and taking laps on Montezuma Express.

The season before, in 2024, Keystone opened on November 2. For 2026-27, Vail Resorts' August 18 announcement again set Keystone's target as "as soon as possible in October." Keystone is hoping to be first in North America for a second year in a row, with dates depending on weather and conditions. As of now, no 2026 snow-gun test or snowmaking start has been announced.

Counting from the September 20 summer close, an opening on the same date as last year would make this gap about five weeks. Matching 2024's November 2 opening would stretch it to about six. Whichever it turns out to be, the first sign the gap is ending will be snow guns running above River Run. Summit Daily reported in July that Rashidi was working with Vail Resorts to look into running the River Run Gondola year-round, since "it seems like when that gondola is running, people assume that Keystone is open." That idea is still being explored, and no schedule has been announced.

Once the lifts are running, last year's opening release listed free parking in the River Run Gondola lot and at Mountain House. Summit County's winter bus timetable, which includes the Silverthorne–Dillon–Keystone route, runs from November 15, 2026 through April 17, 2027. For the summer side of the calendar, our Keystone Friday rhythm guide covers the River Run concert season that ended this month.
