How Breckenridge's December Turned Into One Long Festival Between the Santas and Ullr

November 5, 2026

On Dec. 11 last season, Breckenridge was getting ready to open the Rocky Mountain SuperChair. That lift is what gets skiers to Columbine, Claimjumper and Northstar, and its opening counted as early-season news, as Summit Daily reported at the time. This year on Dec. 10, the resort plans to host freeski slopestyle qualifications for a FIS World Cup stop.

The stretch that used to be about which terrain had opened now has something scheduled on three weekends in a row. Lighting of Breckenridge is on Dec. 5 and the last day of the Rockstar Energy Open is Dec. 20. In between, the town and the resort have filled the calendar with a returning World Cup contest, a new resort holiday, the 63rd Ullr Fest and a free three-day snowboard festival. The Main Street events mostly have posted start times already. The contests need a course built on a mountain whose opening day, as of this week, is still a target date.

The Campaign Behind the Calendar

This lineup came out of a marketing plan. In August, Breckenridge Ski Resort launched its Kingdom of Breck campaign, which Summit Daily described as an effort to reclaim the resort's rebellious, independent roots. The plan includes an Après at the Overlook music series, surprise IYKYK pop-up performances, a Ullr Time Mega Shotski, shared hot dog towers, Peak 8 T-Bar après, Founders Day and major new and returning competitions.

Founders Day is the newest date. The resort has adopted Dec. 16 to honor the people who started the ski area. Vail Resorts names them as Trygve Berge, Sigurd Rockne and Bill Rounds, who opened the Peak 8 ski area in 1961. The resort says the day will also honor the people who keep shaping Breck. It hasn't published a public program for the day yet, so for now it's a date on the calendar with no schedule attached.

The on-mountain food plans follow the same theme. In its Oct. 26 dining release, Vail Resorts lists these additions at Breck:

  • A Climb and Dine series, where you skin or hike uphill to your meal
  • The returning Hot Dog Tower
  • A Kingdom of Breck bourbon cocktail
  • The Ullr Time Mega Shotski at T-Bar
  • A Sweets Station at TenMile Station

The same release says Epic Pass holders get 20% off dining.

Two Contests, One Course Builder

The biggest addition is the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix, which comes back to Breckenridge Dec. 10–13 after 12 years away. It opens the 2026–27 domestic freeski and snowboard World Cup tour and is one of 13 World Cup events in the U.S. this winter. It also kicks off the Grand Prix's 30th anniversary season.

"Twelve years is a long time to be away, and we are proud to kick off the domestic freeski and snowboard World Cup season in Breckenridge."

U.S. Ski & Snowboard CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said that in the joint announcement from U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Breckenridge Ski Resort. The contest runs over four days. Freeski slopestyle qualifications are Thursday, Dec. 10, and snowboard qualifications follow on Friday, Dec. 11. Freeski finals are Saturday, Dec. 12, and snowboard finals close the weekend on Sunday, Dec. 13. Spectators are welcome.

A week later, the Rockstar Energy Open returns for its second year, Dec. 18–20. Admission is free, and VIP packages are available for purchase. The Rockstar announcement describes a "ParkStyle" course designed by the riders instead of a standard slopestyle, halfpipe or big air layout. It notes that the format earned "Pro's Favorite Event" from Snowboard Magazine for the 2025–26 season. Olympic gold medalist Red Gerard, who grew up in Summit County, said in the same release that "getting to do this again in my own backyard means a lot."

Charles Beckinsale leads the course build for both contests. His Rockstar course is built with Snowpark Tech. Both events also tie back to a piece of local history. In 1984, Breckenridge became the first major Colorado resort to allow snowboarding.

If you're following the contest circuit, note the overlap down the road. Copper Mountain hosts its own Toyota U.S. Grand Prix Dec. 17–20, the same days as Ullr Fest and the Rockstar Energy Open.

Main Street Runs Mostly on Posted Times

The town's two long-running December traditions bookend the contests, and both have published schedules.

Here's the full stretch as it stands this week:

Date Event Where What's set
Sat., Dec. 5 Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas Main Street Full afternoon schedule posted
Thu.–Sun., Dec. 10–13 Toyota U.S. Grand Prix Breckenridge Ski Resort Qualification and finals days posted
Wed., Dec. 16 Founders Day Breckenridge Ski Resort Date only
Thu., Dec. 17 Ullr crowning, Shotski, parade, bonfire Blue River Plaza, Main Street, East Sawmill Parking Lot Times posted
Fri., Dec. 18 Rockstar Energy Open film festival and concert Blue River Plaza Time TBD
Sat., Dec. 19 Ice Skate with Ullr Stephen C. West Ice Arena Time TBD
Fri.–Sun., Dec. 18–20 Rockstar Energy Open Breckenridge Ski Resort Dates posted

On Dec. 5, GoBreck's posted schedule starts with a 3:30 p.m. dog parade. It begins by the Canteen on North Main and heads south on Main Street. The Moose March follows at 4 p.m. and the Race of the Santas at 4:20 p.m., starting at Watson Avenue and running south. The tree lighting is at 5 p.m., and Santa visits from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 17 is the busiest single day on the calendar. According to the Town of Breckenridge's Ullr Fest page, the afternoon goes like this:

  1. 3:00 p.m. The Ullr King and Queen are crowned at Blue River Plaza. Both are local residents chosen for their contributions to the community.
  2. 3:30 p.m. The Breckenridge Distillery Shotski attempt takes over Main Street with the Breckenridge Mountain Rotary. Registered participants check in at the Riverwalk Center starting at 11 a.m., and lineup is at 2:30 p.m.
  3. 4:00 p.m. The Ullr Parade runs down Main Street from Wellington Road to W. Adams Avenue, with staging on the 300 block of North Main Street. The most creative floats win cash prizes.
  4. 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The town bonfire at the East Sawmill Parking Lot burns old Christmas trees from past years.

The Shotski needs 1,444 people to beat the record Park City now holds. Participants must be 21 or older. One part of the town page lists the cost at $20, with all proceeds going to the Rotary.

On Friday the Rockstar crowd heads down to Blue River Plaza for a free evening of short films, fan experiences and two live music sets. On Saturday, Ice Skate with Ullr runs at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. Admission is $13 for adults and $10 for youth and seniors, and skate rental is free with admission. The town still lists both start times as TBD.

The Mountain Half Runs on Snowmaking

The parade, the tree lighting and the bonfire need a street. The contests need a built course, and that course depends on snow. The Ullr page notes that event dates and times are weather dependent.

Breckenridge started making snow on the morning of Oct. 16, after an Oct. 14 storm, Summit Daily reported. The resort is targeting Nov. 6 for opening day, the same date as Copper Mountain. In its August announcement, Vail Resorts pointed to a possible Super El Niño and said the dates could change.

The seasonal forecasts don't support that excitement for this part of the state. OpenSnow's winter preview favors above-average snow in southern and eastern Colorado. For Breck and the other north-central mountains west of the Divide, it sees no clear signal either way. It does favor snowier stretches early and late in the season. NOAA's Oct. 15 outlook gives the Intermountain West equal chances of above- or below-average precipitation. Colorado's assistant state climatologist told The Colorado Sun that El Niño alone doesn't make a big snow year.

Last season shows how slowly the mountain can open, though conditions this year could be different. Breckenridge opened on Nov. 7, 2025, its announced date, with limited Peak 8 terrain: Springmeier, two lifts and learning carpets. By Thanksgiving week it had added lower Peak 9. The first real powder day came in the 24 hours before Dec. 6, with 8 inches. The SuperChair came after that. This year's Grand Prix qualifications land in that same week of the calendar.

The Dates Before the First Chair

Several deadlines fall before the contest weekends. The first is Thursday, Nov. 5. Town-owned lots were free through October for Locals' Appreciation Month, and the South Gondola Structure stays free through Nov. 5. Breck Park's policy charges for South Gondola parking from November through April. The rate table on its skier parking page still covers 2025–26, so check that page before you count on a winter price.

On the bus side, Breck Free Ride's posted schedule says the Upper Warriors Mark Shuttle returns in mid-November.

Put these on your calendar now:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. Shotski registration opens.
  • Thursday, Dec. 10, 5 p.m. Ullr Parade float registration closes. It may close sooner if it fills, and walk-ups aren't accepted.
  • Ullr King and Queen nominations are listed as coming soon on the town page.

If you're building a float, you'll be finishing it during Grand Prix qualifications. That's the clearest sign of how tightly the two halves of this December are scheduled.

Our team works out of a storefront on Main Street, so we'll be right in the middle of all of this, from the tree lighting to the bonfire at East Sawmill. If December's events have you thinking about a place close to the parade route or a short ride from the base of Peak 8, Breckenridge Mountain Brokers can show you which streets work best on these weekends.
