Dillon Has Its December Dates Set. The Reservoir Hasn't Picked One Yet.

October 29, 2026

"We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming skaters, walkers, and winter adventurers back to the Lake Loops in 2027."

That line is still on the Town of Dillon's Lake Loops page. The Town posted it after deciding not to maintain the groomed track on the ice last winter. The reason was the calendar. Summit Daily reported that Dillon Reservoir froze over on Jan. 26, 2026. Denver Water's records go back to 1966, and that was the second-latest freeze in them. The average freeze date is Dec. 25.

So the ice came a full month after its average date. Look at how Dillon's winter is set up this year and you'll see the Town has put its fixed dates on land. The lighting, the markets and the new year-round building all sit in Marina Park and Town Park, where the weather can't push them back a month. The lake will freeze when it freezes. Everything else already has a date.

The Waterfront Has Already Switched to Winter Hours

The marina's shift started weeks ago. The Town's Sept. 30 bulletin said the fall and winter schedule would start Thursday, Oct. 1. Boat rentals and the launch ramp closed that day, and marina hours dropped to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The same bulletin said changing water levels over the season had made the walk out to the docks longer.

The tiki bar is dark too. This was its first summer under new management, as STEEP Brewing Lakeside Tiki Bar at 150 Marina Drive. It soft-opened Memorial Day weekend, according to Summit Daily, and its site now says it will return in May 2027. The Dillon Amphitheater has wrapped its 2026 summer concert season and is pointing people to 2027. The Friday farmers market is also done. The Town's Oct. 1 bulletin says it will return in June 2027.

If you planned your summer around our Dillon summer calendar, every one of those anchors is now on its 2027 schedule. Some of the replacements are already here, a few blocks inland.

Town Park Is Getting Built for Every Season

Town Park has added more this year than anywhere else in Dillon. Eight dedicated pickleball courts opened there in September 2026. The concrete plaza next to them was finished earlier this year, and the market's new paved food-court area was part of what the Town highlighted at the end of the season.

The next phase started this month. On Oct. 6, Town Council approved a construction contract with Crossland Construction Company for a 1,087-square-foot building at Town Park Plaza, the Town said in an Oct. 20 announcement. Here's what goes inside:

  • Three accessible, gender-neutral restrooms
  • Dedicated storage for Dillon Farmers Market and special-event equipment
  • A utility area
  • Year-round heat

The project also includes new sidewalk connections, utility work and landscaping. Construction is expected to run through the winter, with completion anticipated by late May 2027, weather permitting. For the next few months, expect a work site between the courts and the plaza. Once it opens, the building will be heated year-round. The Town is putting money into the park as a place people use all year, not only on summer Fridays.

The Dates on the Calendar Don't Depend on Ice

Dillon's winter events this year are on solid ground, and one of them comes with its own heat.

Date What Where Hours
Tue., Nov. 17 Public hearing on Swan Landing Town of Dillon Per Town notice
Sat., Dec. 5 The Lighting of Dillon and Holiday Lights Scavenger Hunt Marina Park, 111 W. Lodgepole Street 4:30 to 6 p.m., lighting at 4:45 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 19 Dillon Holiday Markets Marina Park, heated tent 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sun., Dec. 20 Dillon Holiday Markets Marina Park, heated tent 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Lighting of Dillon starts with the park lighting at Marina Park. Then a scavenger-hunt route runs through the Town Core and Town Park, so the evening ends up crossing both places the Town has been building around. The Holiday Markets run two days under a heated tent, so a cold snap won't move them. One planning note: the Town's standalone Holiday Lights page still says the lights would stay up through March 2026. Treat that page as last year's copy and use the event calendar for this season's dates.

The Nov. 17 date belongs in the table even though it isn't a celebration. Swan Landing is proposed for 312 Dillon Ridge Road, the former cinema site. The revised plan calls for 139 residential units, townhomes among them, and the owner proposes making 20% of the units workforce-attainable housing. It's still in review, and the Town's Oct. 21 bulletin sets the public hearing for that Tuesday.

The Town Core and Dillon Ridge Have Changed Since Last Winter

Last December's routine may have to change. Pug Ryan's Brewing Co. at 104 Village Place closed on Sunday, April 5, after 51 years, Summit Daily reported. The closure followed the Dillon Urban Renewal Authority's February vote to buy the property. According to Summit Daily's March coverage of the purchase, the Town is exploring possible future uses with Colorado Mountain College. No replacement use or construction schedule has been set.

A few blocks away, the Town lists Waterview at 240 Lake Dillon Drive as under construction. Its approved mixed-use plan includes 80 condominiums and a ground-level restaurant. The Town hasn't posted a completion date.

Dillon Ridge has one change you can already shop. Nordstrom Rack opened at 318 Dillon Ridge Road on Thursday, Oct. 1, the Town announced and Summit Daily covered.

The Town's business directory lists the places that keep Dillon fed between the lake and the ice:

  • Dillon Coffee Lab, 124 Main Street, Unit 107
  • Cameez, 135 Main St.
  • Dillon Dam Brewery, 745 Anemone Trail W
  • Red Mountain Grill, 703 E. Anemone Trail
  • Bistro North, 270 Dillon Ridge Road
  • Dillon Thai, 265 Dillon Ridge Road, Unit A
  • Nozawa, 282-B Dillon Ridge Road

For a few of these, the Town directory and the business's own site list different hours. Dillon Coffee Lab and Dillon Dam Brewery are two examples. Call before you count on a late-afternoon coffee or a Monday lunch in November.

The One Date Nobody Can Put on the Calendar

Here is how far the freeze date has ranged in Denver Water's records, as Summit Daily reported them in January.

  1. Average freeze date: Dec. 25
  2. Winter 2017–18: Jan. 24, which held second place until last winter
  3. Last winter: Jan. 26, 2026
  4. Winter 1980–81: Jan. 31, the latest on record

Denver Water's Jimmy Luthye told Summit Daily that warm early-winter temperatures and high December winds caused last year's late freeze. A slightly older Summit Daily piece from December 2024 gave the average as Dec. 24, so "around Christmas" is as precise as it gets.

The Town's page says the track normally opens in mid-January and closes in early March, depending on weather. Staff take weekly ice measurements before grooming and while the track is open. When the track runs, it's a groomed multi-use course for walking, cross-country and skate skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking. Parking and entry are on Lodgepole Street, at the Dillon Marina, and at the Eagle Statue at the top of Tenderfoot and Highway 6. The Town hasn't posted an opening date for this winter. Until it does, its standing guidance applies: use caution around the reservoir.

In practice, December in Dillon centers on Marina Park and Town Park. The Lighting is Dec. 5, the markets are Dec. 19 and 20, and construction on the new heated building continues next to the pickleball courts. The ice could show up around Christmas, as it does on average, or it could take until late January, as it did last winter.

Swan Landing goes to a hearing on Nov. 17, Waterview is going up on Lake Dillon Drive, and the old Pug Ryan's site still has no settled plan.
